What We've Learned Protecting Refugee Rights

As part of the digital content strategy I orchestrated at the Women’s Refugee Commission, I created monthly digital campaigns with a blog I wrote, along with email and social media I designed promoting each blog to engage WRC audiences about the organization’s work. In this blog post, I leveraged SEO best practices in my writing to elevate WRC’s research. I led a marketing strategy that prompted this blog to become one of WRC’s top posts of the year.

Why We Work to Improve the Lives of Displaced Adolescent Girls

For International Day of the Girl, I wrote a blog post about WRC’s critical work identifying the needs and exploring solutions for displaced adolescent girls. In the post, I explored why refugee girls face so many challenges, along with what the organization is actively doing on behalf of these girls in need. The post showcased WRC’s complex, technical research in a more digestible, tangible way for everyday people interested in refugee rights to understand.

Year in Review 2024: Here’s How WRC Protected the Rights of Refugee Women and Girls

Taking a popular approach to year-end wrapups, I instituted an annual year in review of what the organization accomplished and was most proud of each year. This demonstrated tangible results of WRC’ work for our donor audience while also providing an opportunity for everyday advocates to explore what the organization does and why we do it.

100 and still volunteering

A reader called in about a 100-year-old woman she knew who volunteered for Meals on Wheels. I decided to explore how the poor economy affected programs like Meals on Wheels while detailing how dedicated this woman was in trying to help others. I was able to blend this woman’s life and her work as a 100-year-old deliverer with the bigger issue of the growing need for services like Meals on Wheels.

What slump? Villages never quit booming

I pitched this A1 enterprise story after talking with a source, who mentioned how different the economy within the area in The Villages is from the rest of the state. I did research and found that The Villages had the most new construction in Central Florida and the second-most in all of Florida.

To rein in accidents, feds may change rules

After getting a press release about a lawsuit involving a local dead trucker and driver fatigue, I researched the rules on truck drivers and the resting period they need. I learned that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration was in the process of changing their rules on the issue. I used the local trucker’s story as an anecdote and expanded the story to have a national appeal.

Lake teen guilty of battery in touching student on bus

This is a breaking news story I covered of the trial of a teenager accused of touching a female student on a bus. The teenager had previously gained national attention in Orlando when police arrested him a year earlier for suspected kidnapping (the charges were dropped in that case). I wrote an ongoing story for the newspaper’s website and snapped photos used for both print and online. After writing online all day, I wrote a fresh story for the print version under a tight deadline pressure to complete the article in only 30 minutes.

Smart meters may trim your big power bills

One of the city governments I covered had plans to start implementing smart-grid technology, so I developed this enterprise story. I broadened the topic of smart grid, discussed its growing popularity in Central Florida and nationwide. I also explained how smart grid will affect electric customers in the future.
